When someone searches for your hotel on Google, the booking sites usually fight for the click. There is a free way to put your own website in that list, with no commission. Many independent hotels have not set it up, or are not sure whether it is already switched on. This guide explains what free booking links are, the routes to get one, how to check it is working, and what to fix when it is not.

Quick answer

Google free booking links show your own booking page, with live rates, next to the booking sites in Google Search and Maps, at no cost to you. To get one you need a verified Google Business Profile and a way to send Google your rates and availability: usually through a booking engine or channel manager that is a Google connectivity partner, or by entering rates in your profile if you are eligible. Your details, taxes and prices must match, and your rate has to be competitive for the link to show.

1. What Google free booking links are

A free booking link is a listing in Google’s hotel results that sends a guest straight to your own booking page. It shows the rate for the dates the guest searched and, for the hotel owner or its booking provider, an “Official site” badge. The guest books on your site, so you keep the relationship and the guest data, and there is no commission to Google.

It appears in the hotel booking module on Search and Maps. In Cloudbeds’ description it sits below any paid Hotel Ads, in the “All options” list, next to the booking sites. Hotel Ads are a separate, paid product. You can use free booking links on their own, and add ads later if you want to.

Google says the free offer suits all types of accommodation, from B&Bs to resorts. Individual vacation rental owners are not eligible, as they cannot create the kind of Business Profile that hotels use.

2. Why it matters for a small hotel in 2026

Cloudbeds’ 2026 State of Independent Hotels Report found that online travel agencies accounted for 63.4% of bookings at independent hotels, and that OTA bookings were cancelled far more often (21.8%) than direct ones (10.6%). A free direct option in the very place guests compare prices is one of the few levers that costs nothing but setup time.

AI is changing where guests start. MMGY’s 2026 study found 52% of UK travellers use AI to plan trips. In the US, Google launched hotel booking inside AI Mode on 27 August 2026, but only with large OTAs and hotel chains as launch partners, and in the US only. Independents can still be recommended in AI answers but may lose the booking to a partner’s checkout. For UK independents, free booking links on Search and Maps remain the practical route to a direct booking from Google today. Our guide to AI search visibility for hospitality covers the wider picture.

3. Before you start: a five-point checklist

  1. A verified Google Business Profile for the hotel, with the correct category. If you do not have one, follow our Google Business Profile guide for UK hotels first.
  2. Matching details everywhere. Name, address, phone number, and website should be identical on your profile, your booking engine, and your website. Mismatches are a common reason Google cannot match your property.
  3. A booking engine that shows live rates and availability for any dates, with taxes and fees set up correctly.
  4. A booking page that works on a phone. Net Affinity’s UK data for the final quarter of 2025 put 51% of bookings on mobile, so test the whole path on your own phone. Our website design guide has a checklist.
  5. A rate that is competitive. If a booking site shows a lower price for the same room and dates, guests will click it instead. Cloudbeds also lists price competitiveness among the factors that affect how a link ranks.

4. The three routes to a free booking link

Which route is right depends on the booking system you already use. Start with the first, as it is the most common and the least work.

RouteWho it suitsWhat you needWatch out for
A. Through your booking engine, PMS or channel managerMost independent hotels with an online booking engineA provider that is a Google connectivity partner; a Business Profile; taxes and fees set up correctlySome providers charge a connection fee or only support certain rate types. Ask before you assume it is included
B. Rates entered in your Business ProfileVery small properties with simple pricing, if Google offers it for your profileA verified profile and an eligibility check in the profile. You can enter a nightly rate, double occupancy, minimum stay, and multi-night discountsGoogle’s help page says multiple room-type rates and refundable rates are not available. Rates need updating by hand
C. Hotel Center, directly or via an agencyHotels that also want paid Hotel Ads, or have an agency running Google travelA Hotel Center account, a rate and availability feed, a landing pageMore setup. Worth it mainly if you plan to add ads

Route A in practice. Google keeps a directory of connectivity partners, which was last updated on 23 October 2026 when we checked. It lists several providers that serve UK properties. Check whether your booking engine or channel manager is on the list, and ask them to switch free booking links on for your hotel. If they are not, it may be worth asking whether they have plans to join, or whether another route fits.

5. How to set it up, step by step

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, and confirm your name, address, phone, and website.
  2. Ask your booking provider whether they connect to Google for free booking links, whether there is a fee, and what you need to do to switch it on.
  3. Check your taxes and fees in the booking engine. Google applies strict rules on price accuracy. Cloudbeds notes that per-person-per-night taxes can restrict eligibility, so ask your provider how yours are handled.
  4. Match your details between the profile and the booking system, down to the phone number format.
  5. Choose a booking page that opens straight onto the right dates and room, rather than your home page.
  6. Submit or enable the connection with your provider, or use the eligibility check in your profile for route B.
  7. Wait for matching. Providers quote anything from a few business days to two weeks. Google does not publish a fixed time.

6. How to check it is working

    • Search for your hotel on Google with dates, on a phone and a laptop, while logged out. Look for your own site with an “Official site” badge in the booking options.
    • Compare your price with each booking site shown for the same dates and room. If you are higher, fix that first.
    • Click through and book a test stay, or at least reach the payment step. Check the right dates, room, and price carry across.
    • Track the source. Ask your provider how Google bookings are labelled, as some systems show them as a separate source. In Google Analytics, check the traffic from Google Hotel and Maps listings separately where you can.

7. Why your link might not show

Likely causeWhat to do
Details do not match between your profile and booking systemAlign name, address, phone, and website exactly, then wait for Google to re-match.
Your booking provider is not connected to GoogleAsk them, check Google’s partner directory, or consider route B or C.
Taxes and fees are not set up the way Google requiresAsk your provider to review how taxes and fees are sent, especially per-person-per-night taxes.
Your rate is higher than other sitesReview rate parity and the price you send to Google. Offer a perk for booking direct rather than discounting everywhere.
The booking page is slow or confusingFix the mobile path. Conversion rate is one of the factors Cloudbeds says affects ranking.
It is simply not live yetAllow the matching period, then ask your provider to confirm the connection status.

8. How to link to win more bookings

    • Keep your direct rate level at or below booking sites for the same room and terms. Check any contracts you hold with booking sites before changing prices.
    • Give guests a reason to book direct, such as flexible changes, breakfast, or a late checkout, without discounting.
    • Strengthen your profile. Fresh photos, accurate amenities, and a steady flow of recent reviews all help guests choose you. See our reputation management guide.
    • Speed up the booking page. Fewer steps and clear total prices cut drop-off.
    • Review it monthly. Check that the link still shows, and the price still matches, especially after changing your booking engine or tax settings.

9. What free booking links will not do, and common mistakes

They are not a guarantee of bookings. Google decides whether a property appears and how prominently, and your position depends on your rate, your booking page, and how well your provider connects. They also do not replace your other channels. Think of them as one more direct door that costs nothing to keep open.

Six common mistakes

  1. Assuming it is already on. Search for your hotel and check.
  2. Mismatched details between your profile and booking system.
  3. Sending a higher rate than booking sites.
  4. Linking to a slow or confusing booking page.
  5. Ignoring taxes and fees, which can stop a listing from showing.
  6. Never checking after changes to your booking engine or pricing.

10. Key takeaways

    • Free booking links put your own booking page beside the booking sites in Google Search and Maps, at no commission.
    • Most hotels get one through a booking engine or channel manager that is a Google connectivity partner. Ask yours first.
    • You need a verified Google Business Profile, matching details, correct taxes and fees, and a competitive rate.
    • Check it by searching your hotel with dates, and compare your price with the booking sites.
    • Re-check monthly, and keep your booking page fast on mobile.

11. Frequently asked questions

Google does not charge for the listing or take commission on bookings. Your booking provider may charge a connection fee, and you still pay your normal booking engine costs, so ask them before you start.

Not always. Google says hotels can get free booking links through their Business Profile or through a connectivity partner such as a booking engine. Hotel Center is mainly needed if you also run paid Hotel Ads or manage your own feed.

Google says the offer suits all types of accommodation, from B&Bs to resorts. Individual vacation rentals are not eligible. You still need a verified Business Profile and a way to send live rates.

Most hotels use one, because it sends rates and availability to Google automatically. A very small property with simple pricing may be able to enter rates in its Business Profile if it is eligible, but those options are limited.

Google does not publish a fixed time. Booking providers quote from about a week to two weeks for matching. If nothing shows after that, ask your provider to confirm the connection.

The usual causes are mismatched details between your profile and booking system, a booking provider that is not connected to Google, taxes and fees that Google cannot accept, or a rate higher than other sites.

They can shift some bookings to your own site, which is the aim. Keep your rates consistent and check any contracts with booking sites before changing prices.

Ask your booking provider how Google bookings are labelled, as some systems show a separate source. You can also check traffic from Google hotel listings in Google Analytics.
